The Ultimate Diaper Bag Checklist

As a mom of two small children I have to have a diaper bag. It holds pretty much everything I need incase of emergencies as well as all the essentials for living life with littles. This is what I need to have in my diaper bag with a 2 year old and a 10 month old.

For Mom

  • Water bottle – you have to stay hydrated
  • Shirt – Sometimes your shirt unexplainably gets soiled and its nice to have a backup
  • Extra panties – Since having two kids close in age this has become necessary
  • Baby carrier– In order to carry baby in a pinch, I keep a wrap in my bag at least during the first few months
  • Snacks- it’s not good for me to get hangry
  • Personal items bag- this is a small bag that I keep in my diaper bag with the following items in it:
    • Nail clippers- hang nails are no joke
    • Handkerchief- I don’t usually use facial tissue, and having one of these on hand is great!
    • Essential oils- I usually have at least peppermint on me
    • Charger- incase my phone dies, I don’t like to be out and about without some way to contact someone
    • Headphones- if I want to listen to music, or something the kids shouldn’t hear on my phone
    • Pen- sometimes you just need to write something down on paper
    • Lip balm– where I live, it gets quite dry, I like this one
    • Extra key set- I have a fear of getting locked out of my car. Having an extra key set gives me peace of mind

For Toddler

  • Water bottle – I don’t always like having food appear in my water bottle, so the kids each get their own
  • Snacks – when my kids get hangry it’s not good
  • Shirt – incase of a spill
  • Pants – accidents happen
  • Underwear- accidents happen – I usually keep at least 2 extra pairs
  • Socks – sometimes accidents are big
  • Potty seat – this is something I have kept, but my son prefers against using it right now

For Cloth Diapered Baby

  • Diaper cover– sometimes that poop can get everywhere
  • Prefolds– I keep at least two in my diaper bag
  • Snappi– incase one breaks, a back up is great to have
  • Wipes (if using cloth wipes- a travel spray bottle)- for my daughter I now use disposable wipes
  • Wet bag– a wet bag will hold all of the soiled clothing until we get home
  • Swaddle/ Muslin blanketsmuslin blankets are very versatile, I’ve use one as a diaper in a pinch. They work as toga’s, changing mats, towels, and nursing covers
  • Shirt- for when poop gets everywhere
  • Pants- when the poop leaks it’s not fun for baby to be pant less at 40 below
  • Pacifier– my daughter hates pacifiers, but for my son it was necessary

For Disposable Diapered Baby

  • Diapers- whatever brand of diaper you use have at least two
  • Bags- You can use plastic grocery bags, or doggie doodoo bags, but you need something to put a dirty diaper in

If You’re A Pumping Mama

I had a separate pump bag that I brought with me when I knew I needed to pump.

  • Haakaa– this is just in case your pump malfunctions for some crazy reason
  • Breast pads– this can be nice if you’re a nursing mama too
  • Nipple cream– I needed to use this a ton when I was pumping
  • Pump– if you will be out during a time to pump
  • Bottles– to feed baby
  • Clean wet bag– this is amazing for holding on to those soiled pump parts. I got one specifically for my pump parts when I was exclusively pumping.

What do you keep in your diaper bag? Is there something essential to you that I don’t have listed?
