Baby Safe Sensory Play to Aid Baby Development

Sensory play is great for baby development, but sometimes it can be a challenge to give babies a safe material to play with.  I have compiled a list of ideas for baby safe sensory play. All sensory play should be monitored by an adult. This list is intended for babies over 6 months of age.

Water

What is safer than water? Babies love playing in water. You can put it in a tub, put your baby in a bath, contain the water in a plastic bag, or spray some water on a window for your baby to explore. Add some cups and floating toys. Try using food coloring to change up how it looks. When your baby starts standing they may be able to use a water table too!

Jell-o

Take your water play to the next level by adding gelatin. For more fun allow your baby to help you make the jell-o. Use different molds, colors and let your baby go to town!

Oats

Dry or wet oats can be great fun for babies. Let them explore with scoops, cups, and toys.

Spaghetti

Cook your spaghetti and color it with food coloring! Let your baby experience long noodles great for hand eye coordination. Give them a pasta scoop to practice picking it up!

Tapioca Pearls

Tapioca pearls are tiny little balls that will provide your child with great fun. Cook them according to the instructions and allow them to cool. Give your child tools to use. You can even dye them if you want.

Chia Seeds

Soak your chia seeds in water or milk overnight to make a chia pudding then dye it with colors or leave it plain for your little to enjoy squishing it.

Edible Sand

Grind up some cheerios (not honey nut) and put it in a container for your baby to play with “sand”. Let them have fun burying toy animals.

OR

Grind up some fruit loops for colored sand!

Edible Paint

Dye Greek yogurt with food coloring and let your baby paint! Give them a brush or sponge if you want or let them finger paint! They can lick their fingers as they want with no worries!

Edible Mud

Make some chocolate pudding for your little to play with edible mud! You can make it a more complicated activity for older kids by having them wash toys clean after being in the mud.

Taste Safe Chalk

Mix 1 part water with one part corn flour and let them dry in which ever shapes you desire. Before drying add any food coloring you want for different colored chalk.

Edible Slime
