A Biblical Reason For Minimalism With Kids Toys

I’ve been on a recent obsession with seeing other people declutter their toys and see minimalist toy collections. And honestly I’m overwhelmed by how minimal I seem to be on how many toys my kids have. I regularly go through my kids toys and get rid of ones that are old, not played with or cause problems, but seeing how many toys other people have who call themselves minimalists surprises me. But the more I think about which toys we have and which toys the kids have, the more happy I am with having less toys. My kids really only need a minimal amount of toys and there are few toys I have ever regretted parting with. But there’s even more reason to choose minimalism – a biblical reason.

biblical reason for minimalism

Jesus tells us that we shouldn’t be storing treasures on earth. Instead we should put our treasure in heaven.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”

~Matthew 6:19-21

As a mom of 4, a great way for me to store up my treasures in heaven is to teach my kids about Jesus and pray that they choose to follow him for the rest of their life. That way I will get to see them forever in our forever home.

By teaching my kids minimalism they can choose to store up their treasures in heaven and not be chained to their earthly possessions.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, or his wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

~Exodus 20:15

Since in the 10 commandments we are commanded to not want what belongs to others, kids who don’t have as much are more likely to not become as possessive over having more things.

When you have less toys and don’t always buy new toys for your kids they covet less. They may think that something is cool, but there is less desire or thoughts that “I have to have it”.

I’ve noticed in my kids that they have never had a tantrum in a store because I said we couldn’t get something. They have been a little upset, but it’s never caused a full on tantrum because of it.

This biblical reason for minimalism can change your mind on always getting your kids more and more things. Tune your heart to God to discover how you can downsize your things to covet less and store up your treasures in heaven.
