25 + Fantastic Books We Read To Our Kids In 2025

Last Year I read 11 chapter books to my kids in addition to many picture books. This year I read a lot more books. I try to read during breakfast time while my kids are eating. It helps them focus on their food and they listen better when their hands are busy with something else. If you read to your kids every day they will definitely learn something every day!

Tumtum & Nutmeg the Great Escape

Emily Bearn

My kids loved reading Tumtum and Nutmeg last year, so we ended up finding the prequel at the library. This book was adorable and my daughters really enjoyed reading this and the other cute stories in this book.

Pippi Longstocking

Astrid Lindgren

Pippi Longstocking is a classic. It’s full of silly things that bring joy to kids. My kids are no exception.

Pinocchio (abridged)

Carlo Collodi

I read a shortened version of Pinocchio and my kids thought it was alright, they much preferred some of the other books I read to them.

Mr. Poppers Penguins

Richard and Florence Atwater

My son Loved Mr. Poppers penguin’s. He loved that the penguins did tricks and everything about it.

The 100 Dresses

Eleanor Estes

This is more of a short story than a chapter book, but it was a great quick read.

The Enormous Crocodile

Roald Dahl

My kids really enjoy Roald Dahl books and this one is no exception. It’s a quick read.

Ferdinand

Munro Leaf

Similar to 100 dresses, this is more of a short story than a chapter book, but my kids enjoyed the bull, his love of flowers, and his friendship.

Tumtum & Nutmeg The Pirates Treasure

Emily Bearn

My kids loved reading Tumtum and Nutmeg last year, so we ended up finding the prequel at the library. This book was adorable and my daughters really enjoyed reading this and the other cute stories in this book.

Charolette’s Web

E.B. White

A classic book about a spider and a pig. If you haven’t read it, you really should.

The Tale of Despereaux

Kate DiCamillo

My kids loved the tale of Despereaux. It has everything you can want, a mouse, a princess, a dungeon, and Kate DiCamillo weaves the story together flawlessly.

Stewart Little

E.B. White

Stewart Little is a classic book that is about a kid who is the size of a mouse and kind of looks like a mouse. My kids thought it was cute, but it wasn’t their favorite story.

A Little Princess

Frances Hodgson Burnett

Another classic book about a little girl who is sent to a boarding school. My kids enjoyed watching the movie after we finished the book.

The Magicians Nephew

C.S. Lewis

The first book of the Chronicles of Narnia was greatly enjoyed by my kids. They loved Polly and Digory and of course Aslan. If you haven’t read this first book of the series, you miss out on a lot of backstory.

The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe

C.S. Lewis

The most popular book from the series, was greatly loved by my kids, however I think they liked the first book more than this one.

The Horse And His Boy

C.S. Lewis

This is one of my favorite books from the series. Shasta and Bree are easy to jump into their story. Make sure you read the 2nd book before this one.

Prince Caspian

C.S. Lewis

Prince Caspian was not done any favors by the movie that was made in the early 2000’s. The book is much better. My kids probably won’t watch that movie.

Voyage of The Dawn Treader

C.S. Lewis

This is another favorite book from the series. Eustace and his cousin’s have a great adventure. The dufflepuds are my favorite. The movie from the early 2000’s was awful and completely ruined the book in my opinion and I don’t plan to let my kids watch it until they’re much older.

James and The Giant Peach

Roald Dahl

I hadn’t read this book as a kid, but my kids enjoyed the fun adventure that James gets to experience.

Tumtum and Nutmeg a Christmas Adventure

The Silver Chair

C.S. Lewis

The Silver Chair is another of my favorite books from the series. I don’t think my kids were old enough to enjoy Puddleglum but I always do.

Tumtum and Nutmeg a Circus Adventure

Emily Bearn

My kids loved reading Tumtum and Nutmeg last year, so we ended up finding the prequel at the library. This book was adorable and my daughters really enjoyed reading this and the other cute stories in this book.

The Last Battle

C.S. Lewis

The last book in The Chronicles of Narnia, the last battle ties it all together with a bow. My kids may enjoy this book more than I do.

Doctor Dolittle

Hugh Lofting

I don’t think my kids like this book much. I hadn’t read the book until now and I’m glad I did.

The Mouse and The Motorcycle

Beverly Cleary

My kids enjoy stories of mice, if you can’t tell. They loved the unlikely friendship that forms between Ralph and Keith.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Ian Fleming

The magical car was exciting for my kids and they enjoyed the adventure. The chapters are long though- it’s split into 3 parts so don’t tell your kids you’ll read a whole chapter before bed!

The Magician’s Elephant

Kate DiCamillo

Kate DiCamillo did it again. Another book where the words flow out and draw the reader in with stories woven together to join unlikely stories all into one.
