11 Books We Read To Our Kids In 2024

I near the middle of 2024 I decided to read some chapter books aloud to my kids. My kids were turned 5, 3, and 2 this year. Of course this doesn’t include many beginning reader books, picture books and a range of other books I also read to my kids. I read at least 5 of that kind of books every day in addition to reading some of these books. These are just the chapter books I read. I plan to read a lot more books to them next year and make it a regular part of our days. Here are the books we read in 2024.

books we read

The Giraffe The Pelican And Me

Roald Dahl

This was the first Ronald Dahl book I read to my kids. I had never read it before. My kids loved it and I enjoyed the quick read. It’s silly and full of rhymes.

The BFG

Roald Dahl

After reading the giraffe the pelican and me my kids wanted more books like that one. We read this book quickly and my kids loved the fantastical world and silly words the BFG used. They’re excited to see the movie for this book.

Matilda

Roald Dahl

My kids enjoyed Matilda and we watched the movie right after reading it. My daughter thought the movie was kind of scary, but they liked the part where Mrs. Trunchbull went out the window.

The Magic Finger

Roald Dahl

I’m not sure when I read this book to my kids but they weren’t as in love with this book. I think it was confusing how the birds and people changed places and I am not sure my kids understood the hunting part.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

Roald Dahl

My kids loved the oompa loompas rhyming songs and the silly things that happened to the unkind kids. They really wanted to see all the pictures in this one and I think it might have been harder for them to follow the more advanced language. We plan to watch the movie soon.

Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator

Roald Dahl

This book took a lot longer to get through and I’m not sure if it was having a new baby or just that the book wasn’t as rich as the other books by Ronald Dahl.

Aesop’s Fables

Anna Milbourne & Linda Edwards

The version we read was from Usborne and had beautiful images. I think the most well known story in this book is the tortoise and the hare. My kids were excited for me to read these short stories to them. I don’t think I have read these stories before and I really enjoyed “How Bees Got Their Stings”.

Flat Stanley

Jeff Brown

This book is a quick read. It’s cute and hilarious to kids. My kids enjoyed it, but I finished reading it to them in one sitting since it was so short, so I don’t think they will remember it well. I might have my kids read this for themselves when they get a bit older.

The Chocolate Touch

Patrick Skene Catling

John Midis’s name alone might have you know what this book is about. It has a lesson and tries to get kids to realize not to be greedy, but since it’s focused around food I’m a little worried about how that might come off to my kids. I don’t know if I would read this book again to my younger kids when they can remember.

The Adventures Of Nutmeg House

Emily Bearn

This was a book I bought because of the cover. I thought my daughter who loves small things would love it and I was right on the money. The tales of the mice scurrying around the house and helping kids brought joy to my daughter and she would beg me to read it. They’re excited to read more mouse books in the future. (And boy are there lots of other mouse books- Stuart little, the mouse and the motorcycle, the tale of desperaux, red wall, and many more)

Tales Of Winnie The Pooh

A.A. Milne

While we were reading Charlie and the chocolate factory we read this book as well. My kids really enjoyed the stories. They haven’t seen any of the shows or movies and didn’t know any of the characters until I read about them, and I love that so much. I hadn’t ever read this book before reading it to my kids.

My kids look forward to reading more mouse books, James and the giant peach, and Peter Pan next year. I hope to read at least 1 book a month to my kids for 2025!

I’m a born and raised Alaskan and stay-at-home mom of two.  I love baking, scrapbooking, and working on money saving strategies.
